Yes - even more remarkable is that he named his son Koffi soon after they got very close in 1977. For a young guy he seemed to be influential.

This is the one of the few interviews where Papa Wemba takes the time to really put into perspective their once very close relationship and Koffi's humble musical beginnings; where he wasn't just a composer, but Wemba's student and his assistant when he first started coming to Brussels/Europe. Koffi didn't start singing until after Papa Wemba met him. Papa Wemba also assisted a bit in arranging guitar lessons and told him to take full credit for compositions. However, Koffi is correct in stating he was never a member of Viva, nor was he paid.

It was a father-son relationship for the two, but unfortunately when a relationship that close turns bad, things get very hostile. Nevertheless, in full polemique, Wemba spoke about him in interviews without the complex young artists have now. He also did friendly mabanga for Koffi in most of his albums.

 indeed i watched an interview of papa who said on 24th of december in 1977 if i recall well there was a tribute to late maman mobutu in brussels and koffi managed to arrive there  and they worked on a tribute song for her,and at the end papa looked at koffi and told him "we are going to sing together" and this was the first time koffi ever stepped on stage
for all his bad sides,papa did something which build so much careers, he allowed his song writers like koffi,wazekwa,karmapa to name a few in studio i'd even say he forced the guys to be there(i recall an anecdot from wazekwa saying that when papa was dealing with  producer egue toyeye and programming songs he wanted him to be around to learn how to deal with producers) and this developed the guys' taste for getting 100 per cent into music while all of them were doing something else in their lives
