I am a big fan of Rumba Congolaise and "congovibes" is the premier blog where people like me and the rest of you guys and gals get a chance to express their love and fandom for this lovely music. So I would like to start something new. Once a week or so I will post an "Open Thread" where all of us can post any thought, media, anecdote, etc of Rumba Congolaise with the hope that in doing so we can discover as well as uncover very unique and interesting things about this music we love so much. The main point of this endeavor is to generate dialogue and conversation beyond topic specific posts. So with that being said, here is to the first congovibes "Open Thread".

Good idea. Here's mine.. Why is this music not called Soukous music anymore? I was introduced to this music when it was called Soukous music thanks to the likes of Kanda Bongo Man, Aurlus Mabele, Alain Kounkou, Yondo Sister etc.....Zaiko Langa Langa is one of the oldest groups that made music along the "Soukous era" and are still relevant today. The Wenges came and changed the game. While I also like today's Congolese music, i miss the good old music which is really the foundation for today's music.

Zouk is still Zouk music since Kassav, Experience 7 and Zouk Machine. The music can and must evolve but the foundation should remain the same. And question of the day: What is today's Congolese music called? Rumba is a style of Congolese music, so please don't say rumba.

The music has often been two sides of the same coin. Romantic ballads and social commentary on one side and the dance music on the other. I think it is one and the same genre still but the romantic ballads have dominated more than the dance music lately.

lol u tell me man. but i like the different and innovative music that the new generation are exploring. i know a lot of pure soukous fanatics despise it but something like this from the congo music scene for me is interesting and fresh
