After watching interviews of Sam Tshintu, Blanchard Mosaka, Gessac, Modogo Gianfranco Ferre and Acha Movoto. I came to the conclusion that Wenge 4x4 fooled a whole generation. Why? Because in that era they let people believe that they paid those Mercedes Benz with their own money from concerts, while those cars were in the most cases stolen. In the 80s if artists like Papa Wemba, King Kester Emeneya & Bozi Boziana came to do their 45 days in Europe with their band, they were then sleeping in houses of Congolese people and having no value (doing the dishes for them, cocking for them, etc.) and returning after that with nothing's big (just with alot of expensive cloths to impress the youngsters in Kinshasa, since that the SAPE-movement was very hot). Wenge 4x4's influence and later those of la Carre Maqiue (Maison Mere-BCBG-QL-Viva) brought in my opinion a generation of fake musicians who just came to be wealthy and to not make real music. Look now at the Congolese music-scene, there are not real singers anymore like in the '90s and 2000.
In '90s when Wenge Musica started to tour in Europe, those "grandpretres" decided from then that they have to return with cars in Kinshasa. It boosted Wenge Musica even more, which came with a new image. Since that they gave the image of guys who were not those "gangsters" and "weed-smokers". They knew how to speak French and the majority of the band had studied. They started to have relationships with kids of politicians and army-officers from the MPR-regime. They started to build and buy villa's in Ma Campagne (quarter in Kinshasa were rich people are living). This all wake Koffi Olomide & Pepe Kalle up. Koffi Olomide who was living in Bandalunwa started to have headaches of seeing Werrason & JB Mpiana rolling everyday in their Benz's. Pepe Kalle was at that moment suffering in house if it started to rain, letting his family members sleeping in better places of his house. From then they started a war againt Wenge. (Pepe Kalle) "Aaah ba petit balobaki trop", (Koffi Olomide) "Boloba na ba petit yango, ko kende liboso eza kokoma te", (Quartier Latin reacting against Ekokota) "Zero sur 30 n'existe pas", etc.
They started also to buy cars and build villa's. It made youngsters in Kinshasa dream, were it was now getting very difficult to get jobs and were the economic crisis was hitting very hard since 1973 and especially after the two big lootings of 1991 & 1992 by soldiers in Kinshasa.
Building villa's and buying expensive cars gave a bad image to bandmembers, who started to think that their leaders were slowing becoming millionaires. They started not to be satisfied with the payments they were getting and wanted also to get cars, like their leaders and friends of Wenge 4x4. Not knowing how difficult it is to buy more than 20 brand new cars just coming from money of concerts. When Defao toured in 1995 in Europe with Big Stars, the whole band refused to return, because they didn't want to return without cars and weren't happy with their payments. With Defao returning disappointed to Kinshasa and restart his band (with the new generation of Kabose, Theo Mbala, etc.)
When tensions started to be heavy in Quartier Latin, after having peformed at Olympia, Brixton Academy & Zenith (1998). The bandmembers said that they have to return with Mercedes Benz-cars, like the way the whole band Wenge BCBG returned to Kinshasa in 1998. Koffi Olomide refused, which made the tensions worser. After the creation of Academia, Koffi Olomide was forced to get cars for his band-members. Werrason who wanted to prove JB Mpiana and Wenge BCBG a point (being affected by the words of Alain Mpela & Tutu Calugi), decided to get cars for the whole band during their first Europe-tour. With JB Mpiana was reaction buying cars also for female dancers. And Koffi Olomide knowing that guys like Fally, Jordan, etc. weren't happy the way Ferre, Celeo, etc. were picking their girlsfriends in Bandal, went to get also cars for the whole band after having performed at Bercy. It was the start of a war about cars. It gave another image to people in Kinshasa, who started to think that they were rich and it made also them also wanting to be musicians, while they were in reality broke (doing matolo to big donors and politicians saved them). Gessac who was in war against Bill Clinton Kalonji, wanted to buy a Ferrari like Bill Clinton. In 2004 Culutra Pays-Vie went to Europe for the recordings of Et Apres and asked Wazekwa if he could buy a Ferrari for him. With Wazekwa explaining to him that all those cars musicians from the Carre-Magique (QL-BCBG-Maison Mere-Viva) were getting were in reality stolen cars and he didn't want to send people to steal cars for them like other leaders (some even made a hint about it in their generics) and said to him that he had to do some jobs. Gessac didn't really believe him and was hurt thinking that Wazekwa wanted to hold the money he was getting for himself, while it was the true. Being eager to counter Bill Clinton, he went to do those jobs and with some money from Wazkewa and his donors he finally bought his Ferrari, which didn't last very long like that of Bill (the roads of Kinshasa are in very bad conditions). After 2001 musicians were getting the opportunity to bring their own list of mabanga's to their leaders, which gave the chance to build and buy houses in Kinshasa. Compared to the generation before them who never had that chance and sung songs just for free or cloths and the mabanga's coming from their leaders.
