I know there is a thread in 2k13 about this, but there weren’t a lot of views & recently i listened to both albums & even i was a little boy when those cd’s came out, i remember the hype & the quality.

I believe that sanction is an amazing cd, great rhumbas, heavy sebens, 3 great singers, 2 dope atalakus, with lebou, pathy, mike evian & djudju chet.
I think that album is like a « droit de veto 2 » & it’s sounds great.
But the difference between viagra & sanction, is the fact that sanction is so a « ex quartier latin musicians » album & viagra is like a normal groupe, like bcbg, maison mere, quartier latin, zaiko (figure they removed « quartier latin » on the cover).
Viagra introduced new signers like abel benz, tonton lay (wich did great vocals on the album), eric menth; the arrival of beniko popolipo (the autor of ezala zala, one of my favorite song on the lp), suzuki, tshetshe deballe, mustapha, clovis silawuka, pitchou concorde & blanchard (im not sure, correct me if i’m wrong).
Sometimes I imagine how it could be with bouro mpela wich participated on the early recording but at the same time, his return in ql for effrakata was a blessing.

Except sam’s abusive mabanga (wich is sometimes annoying), viagra is a great cd, they sound more experienced, there sound more independent (of the image of « old koffi’s musicians ») & the arrangements are great, but the hunger they had in sanction hmmm... i dont know wich album i prefere.

Ps : viagra hightlights are ezala zala, the fact that there is suzuki, kimpwaka (heavy), chico (surprising from dolce parabolique), zabalumbu (best track on the album), jules bm (best modogo’s song he ever done in my opinion)
Ps 2 : even bouro mpela is my favorite artist in the quartier latin’s camp, his song « da silva » in santion was wack
Ps 3 : I think if there weren’t no leadership problems, the group would remain longer, beceause the quality was there

Sanction is way better I can listen to that all day long it had huge impact and will forever be a classic. Viagra I didn't like it in the beginning it took me a few more listening sessions then it grew on me but I still don't like it the way I like sanction I can listen to a few songs here and there from viagra and skip a few but with sanction I can't. Viagra was still cool and was more mature but I was missing bouro in that album even though I was delighted he was back in QL, so for me sanction wins by far

Rocky Blanchard didn't particapte he was still a Quartier Latin-member during the records of Viagra. Then Koffi left him behind with Babia, Bibi Sucre, Mamale, CNN and many others when he went with to Zenith and the USA. He joined Academia when they returned in Kinshasa in the summer of 2001. They were looking for a new bass-player, since that Pathy Bass & Silawuka stayed in Europe.

Viagra was a good album but not really well receveid in the Congolese community. 4 Coins Kandala was better received. This all because it came out on the moment when Kibuisa Mpimpa & Internet came out and alot of guys left Suzuki, Lebou & Pathy. Another thing is that Sam decided to break with their music-label Secteur A. Sam decided to reform Academia when they returned in Kinshasa in 2001. He decided to put himself on the front and the rest behind him, recruiting also already replacer for Mboshi, Somono, Modogo who had almost the voice, preparing then the Droit d'Asile-album (a part ended up in Sam's solo album Sacrifice) with 4 Coins Kandala being the preview. Sam changed also the name of the band. Academia being writed then as Akademia and the name Quartier Latin putted away. But his plan to force Mboshi, Modogo slowly away didn't work. This was because when he came in Europe in 2002 he had problems with the french-justice for the many ngulu's they brought in 2000. The French justice forbad him then to leave the Schengen-Area 7 years long until that the case was solved, like Nyoka Longo. Modogo tried then to lead Academia in Kinshasa, but then members started to get impatient leaving Academia one by one from 2002/03. The most musicians went to Koffi (Tonton Lay, Mbetenge, Kaddy Show, etc.). Sam who wasn't able to return to Kinshasa for the moment tried to give his carreer another turn by letting focussing his music towards the French Antilles and diaspora with the Sexy-Chocolat album. Koffi started to mock them behind the scenes. Things didn't go well anymore with then Modogo & Mboshi returning to Quartier Latin which meant the end of Akademia. Koffi then contacted Sam if he wanted to return to give his career a new start, but he refused and started to attack him for in interviews.

I think that Viagra would have a better reception if they released it earlier. They overstayed in Europe. They spent 9 months in Europe returning in August 2001, during that moment people in Kinshasa were focused on the fara-fara at Fikin of JB Mpiana vs Werrason and the release of JB's Internet. With them releasing Viagra at the same moment. Everybody already forgot the hype of their two shows at LSC of the 23th November and the 30th December, when they beated Werrason with his fara-fara in Paris.

I prefer Sanction above Viagra. Santion was fire. Not forget that they sung with only 3 singers and it was a live-album. It would have been interessting if they recorded 2 other albums with the same Sanction-line up. Sam and co were to eager to compete against Wenge BCBG, Wenge Maison Mere, Nouvelle Ecriture & Quartier Latin by recruiting alot of musicians. Maybe to much. Except the generic I took me alot of time to like Viagra being also focused on other albums. But on the end I liked the most songs with Zabalumbu, Colation, Kimpwaka & Reflexion being my favorites.

The succes of the generique in Africa made them get nominated for the kora awards as best band of africa



I think that Tonton Lay would have been the second leader of Academia if they didn't got problems with the ngulu's. Sad that he didn't stay long in Quartier Latin. He left quickly after hearing Koffi talking bad about him and mocking him.

We are in 2018 and i still dont get why mustapha & clovis silawula left ql for academia, but their contributions in viagra were good.

I like I said he left because didn't like the way Koffi was talking bad about him behind his back.

Mustapha left because of the way Gipson gave him a hard time with his nkisi when he tried to return, like the way he did to many other tenorists who were a treat to his position. About Clovis I don't know maybe he joined Academia, just to have a band to play in it and in meantime looking for French papers. After that he spent a little time with Quartier Latin Integral of Lebou & CNN and then he joined Wazekwa for a little moment in Europe. 

If you look well almost all musicians who came for the first time with Koffi in Europe for Bercy wanted to stay,because of the dream to be in Europe being accomplished  and the girls they met there (even Fally). I will not mention the names of those girls, but they were over dedicated in Force de Frappe and concerts, espcially Ocean's one (I remember how Ocean always shouted the name F.M.). The most returned just to prove the musicians of Maison Mere & BCBG a point with their cars and steeling their girls back. Before Bercy Koffi really took the time with his staff, Zingeti le Ras Kaback, Kisindjora, and co to make the list of musicians who will perform with him at Bercy. Because he feared that the new musicians wouldn't return. With them chosing mostly musicians coming from Bandalungwa (Jordan Kusa, etc.) knowing that they would surely return to prove their rivals of other bands a point and they were right.

Sanction is a better album in my opinion, the production puts the album above Viagra! The acoustics of the instrumentation is recorded and mixed to perfection! For example, the reverb of Pathy Basima's bass guitar is a delight and so is the sharp strings solos of Lebou Kabuya!

The accompanying guitar by Mike Evian is recorded just as well as the other instruments, so that you can hear how well his playing interfaces with the other instruments. And who can forget the anthemic snare rolls and drum fills of DjuDjuChet?

After the success of Sanction, Academia should have just kept the recruitment as minimal as possible; Sukuzi (a proper replacement to Bouro Mpela), Beniko Popolipo (to replace Mike Evian and alternate with Kabuya).

Or how about this...members with papers get to tour in Europe but members added into Academia in Kinshasa are used only for tours throughout Africa NOT Europe. I feel like the leadership wasted too much time trying to prove a point to Koffi, that they watched their band implode from within

You can have it both ways in the entertainment industry; women and success...you don't have to choose one over the other. As long as their is money to be made from what they do, women will be always be present lol

Buying everything for them, etc. Musicians started to profit from them. There even married women who ran away from their house to be with them, which angered their husbands. Or dautgthers of 17/18 years of donors becoming pregnant and the musicians getting throught them French papers. Alot of these women became years later combattans after being used as sextoys/sugermother of musicians. I will not mention names. If it wasn’t the thugs in Paris who were fans of Werrason, then Deplick and Fabregas would have stayed in Europe after that succesful tour of 2010. Because both guys became crazy with those girls following then, espcially Deplick.

Excuse my street language but « n*ggas were h*es ». I didnt realise some of them went to europe for the 1st time so they took the opportunity to stay there like augusto nsingi back in the days.
It seems to be kind of hard to choose «wich artist shound i bring with me? Are they really like their job? Are they faithful with the squad? Can i trust them? »

Money would not let them return. They would use that money to settle in Europe or share it with their girlfriends of Europe and send a part to their family in Europe. Back in those days they didn't have any responsibilties/kids. Guys who were grumbelling on the background about money were vetrans who spent already more than 3 or 5 years (Mamale for example) having kids and a wife in Kinshasa. Emeneya in 2002 gave alot of money he was receiving from concertpromoters to his musician to keep them happy,but almost the whole band stayed since that Emeneya didn't guarantee them to bail their cars/jeeps out from the harbor of Matadi.Anti Choc of Bozi Boziana toured in 2001 in Europe and guys like Kabose & Chamberton were all paid, but they refused to return since that they didn't give them cars like the musicians of BCBG, Maison Mere & Quartier Latin. With Kabose then joining Maison Mere trought Ferre and Chamberton contacting Koffi in Paris and joining Quartier Latin in Kinshasa. The musicians of Defao were next to the Uganda-affair also unhappy for not getting cars after spending 1 year in the USA and some concerts in the UK, Switserland and Canada. The only thing which would let musicians return back in Kinshas from 1999 until 2003 were cars. Koffi was smart and bought the whole band cars with the everybody returning except Ocean & Silawuka and the guys who left earlier during the tour (JF, Depitsho & Deba O'Neill).But from 2006 things changed and cars weren't helping anymore to let the musicians return. Ferre Gola & Didier Lacoste gave the new generation a bad influence. Everybody wanted from then staying in Europe and get European papers and rejoin the band later so that they can be free and travel from Kinshasa to Europe on every moment when they want. Ferre Gola lost in 2008 & 2010 alot musicians because of that. The same for Koffi in 2007 with Les Mineurs (Bapinces, Rolly Nguanzu, etc.) and Fally in 2010. Werrason was lucky to have gangsters and crazy-fans who were threaten Kimbangu, Deplick, Fabregas, Taddet, etc. in 2010 to return. Because they wanted to stay with their girls and get French-papers in a later stadium. The departure of Fally & Ferre's musicians in 2010 caused almost a 5 year-ban for all Congolese musicians. Both artist lost almost the half of their band. I remember Fally not being happy with Equalizer and Alain Mpela's cousin (I forgot his name). Equalizer even missed the Stade de France-concert in 2011, which made Fally furious. Musamariya who was Ferre's atalaku returned in 2010 to rejoin him after having received Belgian papers, but Ferre didn't want to talk with him was ignoring him when he came to the rehearsal, which made him join Wenge Maison Mere. Congolese musicians are very difficult to handle with. I wonder how things will be if Congolese can tour in Europe again. Because money and cars aren't a guarantee to let them return, espcially with those deseparted divorced women who are looking for new men since that nobody in Europe want to date them (some having 4 kids with 4 different men) or the young ladies who are dreaming about them. Those divorced women are luring those internet journalists and actors with the money of social assistance and marrying them. With those guys accepting it so that they can go to Europe.
