The ngulu affair definately hurt their chances of greater exposure, but Bouro's return back to Quartier Latin was a huge blow to the group.
The entire idea of Academia was the alumni of Koffi being able to stand and prosper independently.
With old videotapes being uploaded remind me again how the situations were which I forget. Yeah, Bouro departure was a huge blow to the band. But the two concerts they gave at LSC with him and that one in Brussels with Evoloko Jocker made people quickly forget about it with people then paying attention to Evoloko's son Tonton Lay and the new solist Pitshou Concorde. The problem was that the band wasn't stable anymore and they stayed to long in Europe with them then releasing Viagra during the moment when Kibuisa Mpimpa and Internet came, which was a big mistake and people then only focusing to JB & Werrason and Viagra flopping. But they made a big comback with 4 Coins Kandala and Kinshasa swinging on the generics of that album. Then the ngulu-affaire killed them with Sam Tshintu not being able to return like Nyoka Longo and members leaving the band one by one.
It was better if the power of Academia was in the hands of a manager, like Zaiko in the early 70's or Stukas. So that those tactis of forcing members out would not appear quickly. Bouro Mpela was forced out, the same thing with Lebou & Pathy and later Somono. Modogo was also in that way, having already recruited a replacer for him but he was lucky with that ngulu-affaire which made him stay longer in Academia until they disbanned in 2005 with Sam Tshintu being left alone.
