Do people in Kinshasa listen to music from the other side at all? I understand we might be “different” but we share some of the same taste in music so I was curious as to if the youth of Kin listened to coupe decale from brazza as its whats hot right now on our side, although most would think we’re big roga roga fans
Did people from kin listen to Fumba Mwela and L’arraigné at all at their peak or not really? And does the Kin diaspora listen to any of that at weddings in europe/states at all?

nobody listen to music of Brazzaville in Kinshasa. But those dj's of Brazzaville had/have alot of succes in Kinshasa. Yako tia "Ndungu Badia", Zembe, Fumua Mwela, l'arraigne, etc. were a huge succes in Kinshasa and the other provinces Katanga, Kongo Central, Equateur, Kasai and Bandundu. But those songs were never reached the Congolese diaspora (except Fumua Muela).

I might listen to an old Extra Musica generique here and there but that's it. I don't pay attention to the other Congo's music, don't hear it at parties or anything like that.

That’s also because France is supporting them. Having those ‘centre culturelle’ in their ex’colonies (Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, etc.) who are working together with music of Senegal sometimes times promoted in Brazzaville or Tchad and vice-versa. But it’s not that it get succes.

Another thing is that they think that people from Kinshasa don’t like them and they hate the way people of Kinshasa doesn’t take them seriously, minimisize them and always comparing to the big stars of Kinshasa, which is annoying them. Like the way Americans look to Canadia, Spaniish people to Portugese,  or people o of the Netherlandts to Belgians. This all  made them praising Abidjan, Dakar & Conakry, in the hope to get sympathy, being promoted there and be respected, while they never have been there. But their music mostly stay in Brazzaville & Pointe Noire and sometimes Libreville (where you got a big community of people coming from Brazza) and Kinshasa.


The artists of Brazzaville who are known outside their country are Extra Musica & a little bit Patrouilles des Stars. The DJ’s aren’t know there in West-Africa, because West-African coupe decale bars only play music of their countries with guys like Kratos or Nzete Oussama not being known or taken seriously. There was even a time that they coming Ndombolo-music coming from Kinshasa & Brazzaville was forbidden there.

That is weird because I have a lot of Ivorian and Camerun friends who always ask me about Extra and once when I was in a club the DJ put Etat Major (even though it was an African club it is rare to hear Congolese brazza music).

It is weird also because a lot of Ivorian (Arafaf, Debordo etc.) uses Lingala in their music but maybe it is because they want to be famous in DRC anyway I think that what killed Brazza's music are the polemique that Extra was getting when they were purely copying Wenge style and tried everything to change style which gave them and the whole Brazza's music a huge step back in terms of quality and diversity. But I honestly like Brazza's music even though it is a bit montonous
