So sad that Papy Bastin left the band 9 months after the release of this album due to leadership-issues with Oxygene. It would have been nice if they recorded a second album together. They were ahead Extra Musica and came with something fresh and new with people started to be a little bit tired of Extra.

Mannn Rossen was so obsessed with imitating Soleil Wanga. Why couldn't he sing with his normal voice like Dede Djascko. I didn't like him already from the start when I heard his vocal in Redoutable of Extra Musica.

Back in the days he was seeing Typhohide Tarzan as an 'faux animateur' and a bad copycat of Kila Mbongo. But he and Bulldog surprised me very hard with their cries in Tapis Rouge. They did a good job with Okouere Miracle the drummer, ex'G7 Impression des As solist Bondo Mania and Davy Mbazo the bass-player.

Papy Bastin didn't because of his ego. He was forced out by Oxygene, after bad advice of his staff and jealousy. This because Papy Bastin was going to much on the tv reacting against Herman Ngassaki who was sent on the mission to diss Universal Zangul and promoting/praising Universal. This all made Oxygene's staff say that to him that if he doesn't take attention then Papy Bastin would steal his band. So they decided to fire Papy Bastin from the band, before that he started to suspened for no reason. Btw Rossen, Kerson, Tarzan and co started to vistin Papy Bastin at home, saying that it was better to start their own band, because of Oxygene starting to become like a dictator. But when the decision came to fire Papy Bastin, they all dumped him. But karma fired them back because one year later, Oxygene decided suddenly to leave them working for the police in Cameroon for 2 years this while they were preparing Conjugaison for 2009. Then when he returned in 2011 he started to behave strange towards them with them deciding to leave the band to form Generation Universal.

Universal Zangul wasn't created by Oxy Oxygene. Oxygene was the last artist to be contacted. It was just that many artists in Extra Musica were fed up the way they were treated. They weren't paid and they were often humilated by Roga Roga and co. They were also still seen as "ba nouveaux" while the most were there already since 2000. Papy Bastin was there already since 1998. Rossen Yaourt wanted at some point leave the band and return to Pointe Noire to re-start with his studies. Typohide Tarzan was often suspended for indiscipline, because he couldn't handle the way they were treating him, which made him sometimes reacting openly towards Roga Roga, Espe Bass, etc. and sometime fighting during rehearsels. He was close to be fired. WhenDoudou Copa decided to leave and start his solo career, Papy Bastin, Kerson and co came to his home and saying that if he wanted to start a band with them. Doudou Copa agreed, but he said that he wanted to release his solo album first, because donors already paid him to release songs for them. Or releasing an album with him having 10 song for his donors and the rest having each 1 song to their name. With Papy Bastin then disagree. So they stayed in Extra Musica. Then not long after that Oxygene also left and decided to settle in England where his ex'wife was living. Papy Bastin visited him then quickly with the other musicians, saying that he couldn't do that. Letting him remember that he returned to Brazzaville because of him. (Back in 2001 Papy Bastin decided to stay in Paris after that Extra Musica returned to Brazzaville for the FESPAM. He was angry the way they didn't pay him for the concerts they made in Europe, Zenith and the recordings of Trop c'est Trop. Oxygene was also in Europe waiting for SACEM to pay the royalties of his songs. Then one day Papy Bastin took the metro and Oxygene caught him. Oxy was surprised thinking that he was already in Brazza. He gave then Papy Bastin the advice to return, becasue with him staying in Europe he would kill musiccareer. Giving example of many musicians, also saying that the life in Europe is hard, etc. This all motivated Papy Bastin to return and rejoin Extra Musica). Then after some days Oxygene decided to not settle in Europe and creating with his little brothers Universal Zangul. Sonor Digital, Levyson and Ramatoulaye were also with them, but the decided on the last minute to stay in Extra Musica and preparing La Main Noire who was then announced as Roga Roga's solo album before ending up in group-album (Espe Bass, Ramatoulaye, Herman, Arafat and Sonor Digital adding songs).

No, it he didn’t do that for that. It was because there was some inbalance in Extra Musica after the departure of Doudou Copa, Oxygene and Papy Bastin. This on the moment when Roga Roga was about to start his sing-career and abandon his role as lead-guitarist of the band to Sonor Digital. So to create some create some stability he decided to first release a band album before his own solo album. Because his dream was to get a gold record with his soloalbum, to have featerings with topstars in his album and to perform at band. But with the creation of Universal Zangul, they weren’t really sure about themselves. So he decided to release 6 songs on his name to showcase his singing-talent and the rest to Sonor, Espe, Herman, Arafat & Ramatoulaye. But the album flopped due to bad promotion. So he planned a new group-album called 242, but he quickly changed his mind and they started then working on Sorcellerie Kindoki with him forcing Herman Ngassaki & Regis Touba out who started to become old. This was one of their last videos together.

Since La Main Noire, Extra Musica has been plauged with those tired sebenes courtesy of Sonor Digital and a chorus of uncharismatic singers.

What ever happened to Papy Jah? I enjoyed his vocals on Shalai and Trop C'est Trop, he seemed to disappeared just as quickly as he was recruited. I know Abilisi left to join Academia, since he only appeared in the clip for the generique...that's similar to Willy Bula for Zaiko when they recorded Posion

All sebenes of La Main Noire were played by Roga Roga himself according the credits. The problem with Sonor Digital is that he let atalaku’s dominate him which is the case in all bands since 2006 (the atalaku only has to do “aaah rrrrrr” with then solist stopping and the rhythm-guitarist). While back in the days atalaku’s were following the guitarists. It also seemss that Roga Roga dictate him and doesn’t give him the fully artistic freedom. In Kindoki Roga Roga re-played some of his lines.

For me Extra Musica has a good chorus, even better then some bands of Kinshasa. They are all singing good, but it just that they are copycats of the former Extra Musica-singers. Rav4 sings exatcly like Quetin Moyascko, Levyson sings like Herman Ngassaki, Kassoumbalesa sings like Rossen, Dido sings like Doudou Copa and you had one singing like Abilissi.

Espe Bass & Roga Roga wanted him returning to Brazzaville, but his doctor adviced him to not do it, because he would then die. Then he recovered a little bit and Koffi Olomide tried to recruited him since that he was looking for a real tenorist in Quartier Latin. He sent Lola Muana to Brazzaville, not knowing that he was in Paris. Papy Jah accepted the offer and participated to some concerts and the early recordings of Effrakata. But Soleil Wanga and Gipson Butukondolo weren’t happy and started threaten him. Saying that they have nkisi and that would attack him strongly if he doesn’t leave. Then one day in studio Fally Ipupa confronted Koffi Olomide openly in front of all musicians. Saying that he copies Werrason. “You left CNN behind in Kinshasa to take Kerozene & Brigade and now  you recruited Papy Jah because he sings like Ferre”. Which made Koffi angry saying “So you are making it a Matter of State/Affaire d’Etat just because he comes from Brazzaville”. That’s indirectly inspired Koffi to name his next album Affaire d’Etat. Papy Jah wasn’t feeling comfortable in Quartier Latin despite Koffi always praising him and giving him all he wanted. So he decided then to leave. Then some were in 2009 he recorded an excellent solo-album called Saint Trinité. But the album flopped due to bad promotion. Nowadays he sings every week with Popolipo in Paris. Popolipo is now a big fan of him post often videos of him on his Facebook.




Abilissi was for a short time in Academia, he tried to rejoin Extra Musica in 2001 but they refused. Arafat and Doudou Copa used to attack him during the sebene of Karen Amour. Then somewhere in 2003/04 he released a solo album called Jugement, but he had the bad luck that JPS Production closed with his album then not getting promotion. He was invited to Extra’s 20th birthday in 2013.

Oxygene doesn't get enough credit in Congolese music, the man is a fantastic vocalist! Why did Arafat 2500 Volts leave Extra Musica Zangul and what became of him?

Oxygene gets enough credit in Brazzaville. He, Papy Jah and Guy Guy Fall are seen as the best singers of their generation. Its just that they are from Brazza which makes people in DRC Congo not pay attention to them.

I don’t know the real reason why Arafat left. I just discovered when Roga Roga released the wedding-single that introduced Zaparo de Guerre which was a kind of a test. Zangul-fanatiscs used to say that he left because of not being happy that Roga Roga recruited Etats Unis (ex’ Extra Musica International atalaku). But other say that it was the way Roga was behaving to him. Its sad that he left because it would have been interessting to hear their duo on Sorcellerie Kindoki. Back in the days I used to like Etats Unis for the work he had done on Super Helico and M.E.R.C.I. I wonderif DJ Arafat of Ivory Coast would have got the  notoriety he has today, if Arafat didn’t left Extra Musica. Because when Arafat left, DJ Arafat started to get huge succes in Africa with Kpangor and other singles, starting to overshadow the original Arafat with some people even think that Arafat stole DJ Arafat’s name lol.

Arafat lives in Pointe Noire. When Afarat left in 2008, he announced a maxi-single called Arche de Noe and started each month to attack Extra Musica in interviews. He released also a single called Makouala Melouta that included all animations he had to put on Sorcellerie Kindoki. The single  had some succes in Brazza. Since in 2008 he’s based in Pointe Noire and animates in almost every album of musicians who are based in Pointe Noire. He featured recently on Quetin Moyascko’s generique and is now working with ex’Extra Musica-singer Rav4. 5 years ago there was rumors about him having lost his heard and doing weird things on the street.

Back in the days between 1995 - 2002, you had some Congolese artists recording 16 songs and only selecting 10 because of their contract with the producer or sometimes because of only wanting to select the best songs. But I think that it was because the contract they had with JPS for this album. It would be cool if they could release Papato, Karen Amour & Bikkisa Nga Kayembe on digital platforms with a excellent sound like other Trop c’est Trop-songs.

The same happened when Ferre Gola joined, many QL-members hurted very hard. With Deo, Fofo, Chamberton & Ramazani leaving the band and formed a band called Le Chicmen. But the band didn't last long, because of Deo leaving the band and going to solo carreer.

I think that Koffi want Chamberton and Paparazzi to singing only 2 or 3 songs, because everybody in Quartier Latin had more space on Affaire d'état. In Effrakata Chamberton singing 4 songs (Suivez le guide, Medecin de nuit, Gilba & Tabou Fatou), he also sung in the chorus.
