If ballon d'or was a Congolese thing, which Congolese artists would win it in which year starting from 1990 to now.

I want to see the list you lot come up with and I'm interested to see who has the most wins (think Koffi will have the most wins).

Back in the days you used to have each a referendum of journalists voting the best artists, singer, star, band, etc. of the year it started in the late 60s. Then in 1997 ACMCO took it over and until 2004 which was the last referendum. It stopped because of conflicts between the journalists, the war of Maïsha Parc and not having engough financial support. Then in 2008 they came with Ndule Awards with the last edition being in 2010. In 2011 & 2012 you had also the Okapi-awards.

If that ballon d’or thing would have started from 1990. Then Koffi wouldn’t even win the most. I think Werrason, because he was the most popular star of Congo and had even year big events (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2009). Betere en 1990 until 1997 each would have a new winner (Reddy Amisi, Papa Wemba, Koffi Olomide, JB Mpiana). Koffi wasn’t that big like he's now. Then between 1998-2003 it would have been a fierce competiton of JB Mpiana & Werrason because of their huge succes and big events at Stade des Martyrs, l’Esplanade de Palais du Peuple, FIKIN, Bercy, Zenith & Olympia. And from 2006 until 2014 it would be Ferre Gola vs Fally Ipupa fighting. Koffi would have won only 5 or 4 times in 28 years.

Hard to tell. Koffi would win on some of the first years, say 1995, but Wenge Musica would just dominate all the way through, especially whenever they release an album. Post-split, Werra and MM would be winning through 2003 though El Paris would win twice on 1997 & 1998. After 2005, it'll mostly be Fally vs Ferre, the equivalent to Ronaldo vs Messi.

Oyo topic ya kala lol.

Emeneya never reached the level he had in 1988, from 1990 until his death. When he returned to Kinshasa it were Clan Wenge and his older brothers Papa Wemba & Koffi Olomide dominating the game. In 1997 when he came back it was JB Mpiana who became the star of the year because of the succes of Feux de l'Amour. In the year that he released Mboka Mboka, it was Marie Paul who became the star of the year because the huge succes of Couvre Feu and his concerts pulling huge crowds. He was then the first artist of Clan Wenge to perform at Esplanade de Palais du Peuple being carried by his guards on a tshipoyi (traditional chair of chiefs) during his entrance and cameramen falling down on strais when they tried to film the entrace with journalist Manda Tchebwa having something like wtf. The whole place was overcrowded and people were still coming while the concert was finished. (Marie Paul's nkisi-domination wasn't normal pffff). Unfortunately they didn't release a official VHS-tape for Europe like they did with his concert at Stade Tata Raphael one year later. In 2000 when Emeneya released Longue Histoire it was the year of Werrason having broke JB's record of Stade des Martyrs and filled Bercy.

About 1990, It was very humilating for Emeneya to accept the contract from his sponsor Primus to perfrom in all 24 area's of Kinshasa on the same stage with Wenge Musica 4x4. Who just had found the way to stardom in Zaire after being released from prison when they tried to travel to Europe. Its like now Fally accepting to perform fara-fara concert with Gaz Mawete on the same stage in every area of Kinshasa. Emeneya hadn't a choice because he started to become broke so he accepted the contract and proved all his haters a point and humilated Wenge 4x4 in many concerts, getting then the nickname "Ya Mokolo oleki Bango...." (Big brother you are better than them .... "wenge"), but he was like he became paranoid of Wenge's succes and he started then to diss Wenge 4x4 in almost every interviews (Manda Tchebwa, Bolowa Bonzakwa,..). In the same period he made a concert-comeback at Palais du Peuple, released Mokosa and perfomed Fikin. Then in early 1991 he went on tour in Europe and decided some months later to settle in France with his band (some people claiming that he ran away for Wenge's succes, like they said in 1987 about Papa Wemba running away for Emeneya's succes).

Clearly no space for Emeneya his time was over.

Emeneya's time wasn't really over, there some big events and succesful albums. It was just that he hadn't he same fame he had of 1982-1988 when Victoria Eleison was dominating Zaire and giving Viva La Musica a hard time. Another thing is that Clan Wenge and his brothers Papa Wemba & Koffi Olomide had big support from donors while Emeneya had only Didi Kinuani, also the same brothers were fighting Emeneya very hard to not get any contract abroad. Most people of Emeneya's staff were traitors, for example JDK Decor running away with the money of Longue Histoire to let Wemba perform at Bercy. Also Emeneya taking long to release Longue Histoire and not really being competitve in 1998/1999/2000 by staying months in long in Europe made him lose alot of fans (Bana Tshangu, etc.) to his "mpangi" Werrason, who he used to support openly since the split of Wenge until the Kibuisa-era. (He had still a big fanbase when he came back to Kinshasa. I think that it was mistake from Emeneya to support Werrason openly), while Wemba's fanbase was still intact (becoming every year a little bit smaller). I remember Emeneya complaining about Werrason in private, about not getting any support back or visit at home from. Saying that he's ungrateful.

Emeneya's concert at Zenith de Paris was almost cancelled, because his brothers. Wemba and Koffi met Felix Petit (the promoter of his concert) and tried to convice him to cancel the event, claiming that he was finished, but he refused. Then they sent guys in Kinshasa to manipulate Emeneya's musicians to form their own band, saying that the concert at Zenith will be cancelled, saying that it was better because they were already suffering alot in Kinshasa. Keymembers like Guy Moller, Zoe Bella, Anthony Sampaio, Sweet Elesse and Eric Masudi decided to leave Victoria Eleison to form their own band, just two months before his concert at Zenith. This all made Petit Felix not believe anymore in it and he wanted to cancel it, but Emeneya begged him to not do it and gave even his money back to perform for free. The rest of the story we know (Emeneya performing at a packed Zenith and Felix Petit being ashamed).

In 1985 getting all prices (best star, best singer, best band, best song,...).

I always questioned why Emeneya's brothers would do that I know nobody is perfect but let someone breathe air.

I think that they were scared that he could dominate the Congolese music-scene again, like he did in the six first years of Victoria Eleison, so they did everything to block his career. Succesful Congolese bandleaders always block other bandleader who are a big treat to their succes and do everything to kill the artist who's on thrown and let replace him.

Music is very competitive.

If Guy Moller, Zoe Bella, Anthony Sampaio, Sweet Elesse and Eric Masudi had stayed and stuck around to perform at Zenith of 2001, could things had been different for King Kester's career?

I don't think so. But we will never know. Emeneya and his staff main goal during the tour was to make the whole band happy so that they would not ran away, so they decided to bought a car after every concert with the money Emeneya was received from concert-promoters (Emeneya technical didn't benefit anything from the 2001-2003 tour) for bandmembers and return after 6 months to Kinshasa to prepare Bercy and Emeneya's next solo album. But then they changed their mind, they postponed their return like 4 times, then on the end they said that it was better to stay 1 year (the visa they received was for a 1 year), so that people in Europe would be fed off the musicians and not wanting to give money to them (back in the days, people living in Europe were generous and giving musicians alot money from nowhere) with the musicians ending up by wanting to return Kinshasa by their own. They ended up 1 year and 9 months with Emeneya returning only with his guitarists (bass: yves tshum tshum, rhythm: ade lokela, mi-solo & solo: zozo malaba & willy ebondaki), his atalaku Arc en Ciel, only 2 singers Spino and Pompom Miyake to Kinshasa and rest staying in Europe.

Some people say that ended up by staying in Europe because of them waiting for the summer 2003, because of then being alot of activities in Kinshasa (FIKIN, those big fancy fairs, etc.) so that they could pull a huge crowds. They had planned a concert at Stade des Martyrs, but it got cancelled because of security reasons (the provincial governement didn't want concerts there anymore, because of the big havoc Werra's concert created, gates being broken, etc.).

Zoe Bella and Sweet Elesse ended up by returning in 2003 after Victoria's return in Kinshasa. But that period until the departure of both musicians in 2006, was worser than their first years. They were going nowhere only Kikwit every year and Canfunfu  (a diamond village in Angola) in 2003 being invited by Didi Kinuani, they saw their tour in the UK being cancelled by Emeneya himself and also a contract for a big festival in Brasil. They didn't release an album since 2002, so they had a hard time in Kinshasa. Then when Emeneya cancelled a concert they had to give in Libye (Emeneya discovered that the concert-promoter wasn't serious and went there on his own and gave a playback-concert, leaving the band behind in Togo where they made stop), Zoe Bella and Sweet Elesse decided to leave. Sweet Elesse worked on solo album which flopped and settled after that in Angola, Zoe Bella joined Les Mineurs de Quartier Latin, being then humilated months long on tv by his ex'boss Emeneya for being a minor (mineur is minor in French).
