No, he was very bad. He was after Mobutu, the most hated guy in Kinshasa. He killed alot of people, he stole married women, he also liked to humilate and intimidate people. He didn't like to have handsome guys around him. If he saw a guy with looks near his table if he was visiting a concert at intercontinental, he would then send his guards to send that guy away. But for people working for Yoshad Production (Francis Kalombo, Zacharie Bababaswe, etc.), his soldiers of SARM "Service for Military Action and Intelligence" (which was made to stop and/or kill UDPS-supporters and opposants of Mobutu) and musicians like JB Mpiana, Werrason, Papa Wemba, Marie Paul, Blaise Bula, Manda Chante, etc. he was a hero. Because he was giving them alot of money with them giving big praises during concerts (l'Homme Fort, Tempete de Desert, etc.) or a song dedicated to him in return. With all bandleaders and musicians trying to be close to him and Yoshad Production, knowing that they would get alot of money from. Saddam was not the most hated guy in Kn after Mobutu. Not at all. And Saddam did not kill a lot of people. Those are rumors spread by the opposition back then. You can't name 5 people killed by Saddam.

Of course, he had bad side. He was a very impulsive and violent guy but he was not the devil some people portrayed thru rumors. A bully? Yes, to some people. But not some barbarian killer.

In fact, he was very generous to a lot of people and helped the genre a lot.

When it comes to Wemba, he was not afraid of Saddam. To be honest, he was one of the rare musicians to not be afraid of Saddam. Vieux Bokul was really "mutu ya Esprit". I don't remember who said it, but someone close to JB said that the first time he met Saddam, you had a lot of musician sitting in a room waiting for Saddam; then Saddam came in and everyone had to stand up. Everyone did, the Wenge giys and even guys like Nyoka Longo. Papa Wemba was the onnly one who refused to satnd up saying that Saddam was a "petit" and he can't stand up for him.

Years after Saddam death, when Mobutu was already gone, Papa Wemba said in his Brussel interview that Saddam like and trusted him a lot.

Saddam did not bully Papa Wemba, but he did bully Wenge and even Zaiko.

It seems I misunderstood these events that you mentionned, then.

But I see why now Congolese music today is not like it was decades ago. When Congolese are your donor, you can please them playing Congolese music. However once those donors are gone and the world is your new donor, you need to play what the world wants to hear. Any dissident band trying to make a living from the world market will face the difficulty to sell Congolese music abroad. That's why so many artists changed during the years. And the recent world trends do not make it easy to maintain big bands either.
