Imagine getting into your favourite band, only to realise there are 80 other bassists. OK I'm exaggerating lol, but still. Like the other 5 bassists, you're not even second-in-line. You're just an understudy waiting your turn, hoping you will play onstage, but you never do. That must hurt, regardless of position.

If you group a bunch of guitarist to battle for up to five spots, you'll recruit the best into the group officially and take the partitions of the runner-up to give to your best guitarist.

But why like Congolese bands to overrecruit musicians ?

Competition. It is pretty bad to say it but if you take some poor guys with no food and or sad conditions who are already or want to proof themselves in their passion you will bring the best of them and pick the best of them while having very hungry reserves. Is the same concept we have seen with BCBG atalakus Cellulaire right before dying left the group and lost his spot as the second place that cemented the position of Genta and favoured the explosion of Pajo who could easily rely on the number two spot until Fusee came and became forced to compete

technically they recruit that much because tests bring fans,and also because they cant resist talent,i have never seen except strict guys like blaise bula or wazekwa for example say to a musician "you are good but we are already too much"
i was talking this morning with my big bro who is one of mbuta kiss' assistants,he told me that in december of 2001 bcbg had 193 musicians with the confirmed,the accepted at tests,those who were accepted and manage a couple of appearances,those who entered rotation,those who were tested and never ever sang or play for a second outside their test...
the argument jb and werra also have for doing that since they are by far the ones with bigger full squads is that at least if a musician joins,thats a potential gangster less in streets

musicians haven't necessarly to come from poor families. You got also some musicians coming from Binza, Limete, Ma Campagne, Gombe & Lemba. Michel Bass who we saw last week comes from Binza and his father used to be a professor at the university. Taddet also come from the Ngaliema-area. Sometimes they recruit musicians from Binza, knowing that they will lure girls " ya bonne vie" in the band and donors.
