Felly Dimbedi was from day1 the main solist, since that he replaced his friend and top solist Yoto Nkelani (also known as Delta Force) who went to Zaïko to replace the then sick Mbuta Matima. When they were about to prepare Pas de Faux Pas, Lebou came in, at that time he was not at that level yet and he had to improve his guitar skills. But he was still allowed to play lead on some songs (Stilla for example) of that album, since that Koffi liked his looks alot and his fashion style. Then Beniko came and Koffi of him immediatly the main solist of his group, playing lead on all songs of Noblesse Oblige (leaving Miss des Miss and Evangile to Lebou. Popolipo took Lebou & Felly under his wings. Felly and Lebou would progress alot at that time. Koffi started to love Lebou alot. He made of Lebou the new chef d’orchestre and n1 solist in the pickorder of the group. Felly starting to play more rhythm. Lebou played in Magie the most songs as lead guitarist. Then they played V12 where the three guys shared the tracks with Lebou still being the main solist but Felly getting the trust of Koffi back. Then things went wrong when Lebou started to date Mboyo (Rip), who would not long after that die. The relationship between Koffi & Lebou wasn’t the same anymore. He had some guitar licks on Ultimatum, but the recordingsfile got lost when QL came in Europ. S they had to re-record the album again. Which made Lebou not participate on that album, because he was left behind in Kinshasa. Then when Koffi wanted to finish Loi (Loi was recorded in the same as Ultimatum) He wanted fire, so he brought Lebou along with the other instrumentists of QL & atalaku’s to Europe to record new sebene and new animations. After Loi, he became again the main solist until that he left to join Academia. Felly became then to main solist until 2006.

I prefer Lebou as solist. The reason that Felly is more kwown then Lebou, is because he stayed like 20 years in Quartier Latin, playing also on many generics and main-songs who had a huge succes (Andrada, Ultimatum, Piwawa, Force de Frappe, etc.). While Lebou spent only 6/7 years (not countig his short return), went to Academia and disappeared for a long time.

The difference between both guys is that Felly is strong in interpreting in concerts Koffi’s old songs of the 80s and he’s very disciplined. Lebou is stubborn, doesn’t follow the rules sometimes, but he’s very creative. Felly isn’t a bad solist, he stepped his game from and giving the best of himself in Droit de Veto, Attentat, Force de Frappe & Effrakata. From 2003, he slowed down, maybe because he saw that his position wasn’t in danger anymore or the way he was dismissed as chef d’orchestre after Affaire d’Etat. He did also a good job in V12 & Pas de Faux Pas.

Reminds me of Hono Kapanga, because he created that unique sound of Wazekwa's generiques. However, it was Bijoux Depaulga that played solo on many of the important songs like Dose Unique,Tu me manques, Sautez déjà, and Cinq Etoile among other songs. From what I noticed, it wasn't until Faux Mutu Moko Boye where Hono started playing lead a lot, often he was mi-soloist.

I think Felly Tyson is the better soloist but the one who had more energy was indeed Lebou Kabuya.

I like the opinion that you brought out, and I agree with when you said that Lebou has more energy. When listening to songs like Sanction and Volte-face you can definitely hear that there and that's why FOR ME, I feel that Lebou is better because he really know how to bring a mad kind of hype to his solos!
And with Felly, what is good abiut his solos are that they're pretty "iconic" considering how he marked his territory in "Loi", "Effrakata", "Affaire D'état" and so on! So I see where you're coming from!

Felly in my view was not the kind who really cared to be flashy or too out going. He wanted to simply show his power in the guitar. But Lebou Kabuya was someone that wanted to be noticed (obviously he got that from Beniko Popilipo) and he tended to more passion into his guitar because he also loved playing music in a passionate way. That is why you get the differences between those two great soloists.

Thanks for clarification, my observation is that, each album has its own way of solo guitar sound and all the soloist have to follow that pattern. Just like Pentagon and Titanic, where solo guitar is shared by Makaba, Mboka Liya and Ficare. It is very difficult for a normal fan to identify which song was played by which soloist. However in Kibuisa Mpimpa, the generic bears the hallmark Mboka Liya and Kibuisa was Kapaya. Mboka Liya is the only soloist that most of his works bears some similarities, you can listen to Madova by general Defao and Etepe Buengo to prove that.

Magie, Mansouri, Amen, Sans Suite & Meslian were done by Lebou Kabuya. Petit Na London, Julia, Sylvekou, Detresse & Shambouyi by Beniko Popolipo. Detresse & Dessin Anime (they released it on Ultimatum) were done by Professeur Didace Iboula.
