The Kora Awards were cool until record compagnies started to buy trophies to make their artists happy and in the editions from 2003, there being often two winners in one category. Also from the edition of 2003, 70% of the companies that used to sponsor that event not extending their contract, which made artists boycott the events because of refusing to pay tickets on their own. After the edition of 2005, the governement of South Africa didn't extend their contract with Kora Awards which made in 2006 and 2007 the Kora Awards not taking place. In 2008 it got relocated to Nigeria, in 2009 Blaise Compaore the former president of Burkina Faso bought the events to let it take place in his country for 2010. The last editions were in 2012, they were organised in Ivory Coast. The last 3 events didn't had the impact that editions of 1996 to 2005 had. In 2014 they tried to bring Kora Awards in Angola, but it didn't took place. In 2016, it had to take place in Nanibia and several artists receiving diploma's from the jury for having been selected for different categories. But for whatever reasons it didn't took place and the governement of Nanibia taking Ernest Adjovi (founder/organiser of Kora Awards) to the court for dissapearing and failing to organise Kora Awards in their country after funding his event for 29 millions dollars.
