I finally got my hands on this album in CD format. I highly recommend this album if you haven't heard it - it's good combination of rhumba and sebene songs recorded in the top Studio Harryson.

I guess the album being produced by a small player like KTC really hurt the album's chance of being more known to the public, or to be on streaming. Definitely a "what if" situation, if Madilu hadn't gotten sick in the years following because this group was very talented

Haha, yeah it was a once in a lifetime opportunity for him back then, but he gave up efforts to promote, keep the album in circulation and adapt to streaming. This hurt Madilu’s chances of a successful album.

It’s a shame JPS, Simon, and Sonodisc were all starting to fall apart around this time and forcing artists to go to Sonima, smaller producers, or self-produce. It took a while for a lot of the albums or that era to be added to streaming. Example are Anti-terro, Temoinage, Ligne Droite, and Monde arabe among many others

The good part of the album flopping is that like the ngulu-affair, Madilu had once again a good excuse to not bring his musicians to Europe lol. I will listen to the album this evening.





People used to criticize Koffi for often putting only himself on the album covers of Quartier Latin. But when seeing the pictures of the band members and the dancers on the back cover, I think it would’ve been better if Madilu had done the same or followed Marie Paul’s example by bringing them to Europe and taking the pictures there. I am sure that their faces would look different if they spend at least 1 month in Europe.


There's always a huge difference between musicians that had never been to Europe (or not have been back for 3/4 years) and to those who have been. For example Ferre and Serge Mabiala before the Europe-tour of 1999 or not the same like those who went to Europe. However, it is important for them to travel at least each year, because when they spent for example more than 3 years in Kinshasa you can see a huge difference. For example, the musicians of Emeneya that went back to Kinshasa after spending almost 2 years in Europe (2001-2003). In the video of the Le Jour le Plus Long-preprations, when seeing Passy Ngiangi, late Zozo Malaba,  Willy Ebondaki and co speaking  it felt like they were suffering and they looked older. There was almost no difference between Kin musicians and them

I re-listened to the album and the album is actually good. I don't understand why I wasn't liking it back in the days. Even when I would try to listen to some songs I was still not liking it. I remember in the year that Madilu died, that my cousin used to play this album and Bonne Humeur alot. But I was just not liking Le Tenant du Titre at that time, except the song Rejet, where Madilu really poured his heart, when singing about his ex'wife.


I was surprised to hear Roi Babel singing in the album. Did he really join Madilu's band or was he just a guest like in Pouvoir ? For years, I am hoping for Mbuta Likasu to interview him, because he has a rich career and is apparently a big songwriter (Victoria Eleison, Tambour le Vallois, Nouvelle Ecriture of Reddy Amisi, Victoria Dream Team, Zaiko Langa Langa, Wenge El Paris, Wenge Reference, etc.)

It was supposed to the debut album for his group, but as we’ve come to know from ex-musicians after his passing, was that he was very authoritative and didn’t treat them well, so the album presented itself as a Madilu album - as Mfumu was alluding a bit regarding the album cover. He also didn’t promote his group before or after release, which was normal then for the big groups.

At one point during that era BCBG, WMM, QL, etc had basically their own weekly shows for the spokesmen, jesters, and band members previewing what was to come in the albums

Le Tenant du Titre is a group-album. KTC and Madilu presented it like that in the press. It’s just that the songwriters weren’t listed on the back cover and the booklet has never been posted online. Otherwise we would have known, which songs belong to x singer or y guitarist. I believe that the album does have two or three songs credited to Madilu, similar to how JB Mpiana and Werrason would have songs under their names on group albums.

I don't think Madilu cares very much about generiques, which is okay! There were plenty of artists who were doing it at the time

Madilu is a rumba artist. Sometimes people want everyone to make music like Wenge and later being the same ones criticizing artists for doing everything like Wenge. We forget that it’s the diversity that used to make our music unique. Madilu came from TP OK Jazz, where rumba was the priority. He had a completely different audience compared to younger artists. It’s not for nothing that, except for Pouvoir, all his solo albums Sans Commentaire, Album 95, L’Eau, and Bonheur started with a rumba song. Even if he had recorded a générique for Le Tenant du Titre, there wouldn’t have been space for it on the album, as they already almost reached the 80 minutes limit for the CD
