My Congolese room-mate also seems to have a problem with this terminology. But I can't understand why. Swahili/Lingala ya yesu whats wrong with that??

Kenyan music is not called Swahili music and why should congolese music be called lingala music when lingala is only one of the languages used in congo. There is some music in congo which is actually not in lingala, some is in luba or kikongo so calling congolese music "lingala music" is just wrong but I know this will not make any difference because people in most parts of East africa are used to saying "lingala music."

I think what Sly is saying that DRC music shouldn't be called Lingala music because not all DRC music is in Lingala.

Kenyans are so much addicted in calling Congolese music 'Lingala Music', so much that we people here who love Congolese music so much we are referred to as MTU WA LINGALA, that in Kiswahili meaning Lingala person. Or they can loosely say play me one Lingala there DJ. And again its funny that only Franco music that is mostly referred to as Rhumba here.

I still don't see the big deal

DJ Sly you know that 90 percent of Congolese music is done in Lingala. I can understand why Kenyans think Congolese culture is Lingala since it is usually done that way.

Kenyans don't understand that some Congolese know Kikongo, Tshiluba and Swahili too. Swahili in Katanga is different because they tend to be more similar to Lingala. In plural terms mostly it is BA not WA as Congolese from Kivu, Maniema or Tanzanians or Kenyans. Use. Think Bana, Batoto, Basiku, Badada, Bandugu na wengine. My parents know Swahili of Katanga and not of Kivu and Maniema which are similar to Kenya and Tanzania type as well as Burundi. Rwanda has their own Swahili called Kinyarwanda.

I think this song is pretty good but he may be talking too fast (like some Swahili speakers tend to do). But the song is pretty good.

Yeah, it's not a big deal I was just saying how easy it is to confuse each other ie by saying lingala music because there is no genre called lingala music, swahili music or even English music.

Franco Pepe Kalle, indeed I know the majority of congolese music is done in lingala language but the music itself is not called lingala music.
