I've always wondered why Montana decided to join QL. Wasn't he Chef of Big Stars and Defao's right-hand man? Was it due to Defao's self-imposed exile in 2000?

Also, whatever happened to Eugene Makuta? He was very promising in the late '90s, then he disappeared. Last I heard he was in London.

Yes it was because of Defao's decision to leave Congo. The band split up in Tanzania after running into trouble with Zambian immigration as the band had overstayed in Zambia. Initially all of them wanted to travel to Kenya so they went to Tanzania from Zambia.

Eugene Makuta, Lady Mbala the rhythm guitarist shown in the same clip and other guys are all in London now and play every weekend, Mboka Liya included.

montana said in a recent interview that koffi had been trying to get him since the early and mid 1990's but it was not happening and that one day big stars were kind  of abandoned by promoters in eastern africa while defao had gone to europe and koffi again tried to get him and gave him a good amount of money,and with that amount of money he  paid plane tickets for all the group to go back to drc then in 1999 2000 koffi was still  trying to get him and it worked out at the end in europe after bercy as big stars was about to explode with everybody leaving

Speaking of Mbondas, I think it plays a major role in this types of music. Good Mbonda players can maintain without drums. At least they complement each other.
