Ditto, say what you will about quality of the song,  it's become a massive sensation. Very interesting that the song was done last minute, yet its the only song being talked about on 13ème apôtre. In his interviews you tell he's almost shocked by the success of the song.

The problem that this song creates is what happens to the traditional generique? People like Fally and Fabergas are still putting out generiques and having success, but will other artists now seek to put out Selfie like songs? The folklore stuff is also difficult to gain traction off of.

Back in the day, a good generique meant the majority or entire album would be solid, now as long as one song is a hastag sensation, the rest of the album could be mabanga and noisemaking. 

There is nothing non-traditional about selfie. Selfie is purely a Congolese sebene. The minor deviation is that the solo is intermittent and koffi did the animation. This song is popular because it competes with decalle. Its pace can compete favourably with most songs in the region. Selfie is another ngoma maguy of kin e bouge. It will be danced to for many months to come and i can guarantee you mopao will use it as extension to most sebenes at concerts.

   You'll never give Mukulu and BCBG a break. As recent vids show, they're cooking something and have some new blood, it may take more time as usual, but the end (release) is near.

Yea - In entertainment dienhard fans become very critical after a long time of holding out for the artist/group and them not delivering.

The fact that people relate to it and that it has become popular in itself makes it the best if it is topping the charts. People relate to love, heartbreak or even cars and people have sang songs about such issues but that don't make those songs hits. So Selfie may not simply be a hit because it is titled and is about selfies. That is what YOU think. Maybe if you did a poll and asked people about what they like in Selfie and they told you they like it because it is about selfies and not any other reason then you will be justified to make that generalization.

What is your criteria for judging BEST?

BEST is of course subjective, but a key factor what I find to be best is a song that stands the test of time. I hate to say it, songs like Selfie come and go in African music in general. This song is very reminiscent of Coupe Bimbamba of yesteryear, which crossed all borders, but did not age well.

Then you have songs like Loi, which was a massive success, crossing all borders and and has aged well some 18 years on. For most occasional listeners, Loi is song they associate Koffi the most with.

You're right that this song has brought together people with a subject they can all relate, but a factor to consider is that many people are doing this selfie challenge simply for exposure in social media.

At the end of the day this a forum for connoisseurs of the genre; we've been spoiled by proper music of the past so our particular preferences may not always been in line with the majority.

It is a good generic in the sense that its rythm is danceable and we cant ignore that fact. Take it or leave it, koffi has hit the nail on its head well. Not just selfie issues have made the song popular but the dance that goes with it and the length of the generic makes people crave for it. With the future survival of the song, lets wait for time.
