Yeah, Nico Kassanda was Congo’s first solist. He was a member of Grand Kalle’s band African Jazz and played there from 1953 to 1963 (in 1961 he left briefly to form a band with Tabu Ley, but they returned quickly after negociations). In 1963 he formed African Fiesta with his brother Déchaud Mwamba, Roger Izeidi and  Tabu Ley. In 1965 the band split with Tabu Ley forming African Fiesta National with Roger Izeidi  and Dr Nico renaming the band African Fiesta Sukisa. There would the first time in the Congolese music history a tribal rivalery starting with people coming form the Bandundu-province supporting Tabu Ley and those coming from Kasai supporting Dr Nico. Like since the start of Congolese Music there would also shots getting fired. Tabu Ley attacking Dr Nico with the song Likala Moto (calling Nico a drunk man) and Dr Nico reacting with the song Cimetiere (also known as Toyebi Nganga Na Bino). From 1973 Nico started to lose it when his musiclabel in Belgium became bankrupt. Later on he joined Tabu Ley’s band Afrisa briefly and migrated to West Africa. He died in 1985.
